“Coffee blend” is one of those terms you may already be familiar with even if you are not a coffee enthusiast. After all, the term has been widely used in the coffee industry for decades. But as is often the case with familiar terms, not everyone knows what coffee blends actually are.
Single Origin Coffee
Before we delve into coffee blends, we must first talk about single origin coffee, a topic we covered in a previous post.
To recap: single origin coffee refers to coffee that comes from a specific producer, a single farm, or a delimited region of a country. So, for example, at EcoDelight we offer single origin coffee from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and many other countries.
Coffee Blends
After our brief overview of single origin coffee, now we can talk about coffee blends.
Coffee blends are the result of combining two or more coffees of different origins. There are two main reasons to do this. First, blending results in unique and distinctive flavor profiles. Second, it helps companies manage costs and offer a consistent experience regardless of seasonal variations in coffee supply.
A classic example of coffee blend may be useful to help you understand the process. Many blends are based on Brazilian Arabicas, which tend to be neutral in flavor and are used to form the bulk of the blend. The character of the blend comes from the addition of other coffees with more marked flavor profiles.
Although sometimes used as a way to save resources, at its most refined, coffee blending is a delicate balancing act that entails roasting every separate lot of coffee to perfection in order to form an enticing whole.
