Today we’ll dive into the history and characteristics of a very special type of single origin coffee: Ethiopian coffee. What makes Ethiopian coffee so special is that this country is hailed as the motherland of coffee, and the quality of the crops grown there more than lives up to the expectations of the most discerning aficionados.
A Brief History of Ethiopian Coffee
Although Ethiopia is almost universally recognized as the motherland of coffee, many Yemeni claim that coffee was created in their country. The evidence available (including Yemeni myths) seems to suggest that coffee was consumed first in Ethiopia and was then transplanted to Yemen.
As for the specific birthplace of coffee in Ethiopia, opinions are divided between Kaffa in western Ethiopia and Harar in the east.
The country remained the sole source of coffee in the world until the 1540s, but wars and increased demand led to coffee being cultivated in other countries as well, becoming a truly global phenomenon.
Today, Ethiopia produces 5 percent of the coffee consumed globally and ranks as the 5th largest coffee producer behind Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, and Indonesia.
Ethiopian coffee is known for offering an amazing spectrum of flavors that defies the classifications usually applied to other types of coffee.
This comes as no surprise, considering that in the country grows an astounding array of coffee varieties. The Ethiopian highlands offer such a perfect environment for Arabica to grow that the area houses almost all the varieties of this species of coffea.
Despite modern advances in coffee technology, the country has maintained many of its coffee traditions. And while this is positive to some extent, it also makes traceability more difficult, and often excellent beans are mixed with mediocre ones.
Ethiopian coffee can be divided into two fundamental taste footprints: Harrar and Sidamo/Yirga. Harar has a cleaner taste and lighter body, while Sidamo is spicy, with flavors ranging from fruity to herbal.
