In previous posts, we shared with you some essential terms to understand coffee and took a glance at the world of single origin coffee. Today we would like to take these explorations a little further by talking about single origin Mexican coffee.
Single Origin Mexican Coffee Can Be Outright Impressive
Coffee from Mexico doesn’t always get the worldwide recognition it deserves because most of its production is exported to the United States. However, Mexican coffee can be outright impressive, with a broad range of flavor profiles that run the gamut from floral to caramel.
Another important characteristic of Mexican coffee is that it tends to be naturally sweet, making it a good option for darker espresso roasts.
An Important Player in the Coffee Industry
As of 2018, Mexico was the 11th largest coffee producer in the world, and coffee was considered a “strategic crop” by the Mexican government. For sure, this is a relevant position, but Mexico used to produce even more coffee.
In the 1970s Mexico created a National Coffee Institute and production peaked in 1990 at 440,000 tonnes. The output decreased as a consequence of the dismantlement of the International Coffee Agreement. Nowadays coffee production is organized in large part through small cooperatives and about 30 groups of indigenous peoples. It’s also worth noting that Mexico is one of the world’s largest exporters of organic-certified coffee.
Mexican coffee grows in the southern half of the country, in states like Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Chiapas. Is in this last state, that borders Guatemala, where some of the crops of the highest quality can be found. Chiapas leads the country both in quality and in quantity, accounting for 41 percent of the coffee that Mexico produces.
With this information in mind, it comes as no surprise that our Mexican single origin coffee comes from Chiapas. This coffee is brisk, with medium body, and offers a pleasantly dry, snappy sensation that gives it an unmistakable character.
